Valium is classified as a benzodiazepine, and most of these drugs share common side effects. The most common Valium side effects include altered coordination and balance, nausea, depression, less REM sleep, amnesia, altered learning, and dizziness. Less common Valium side effects include anxiety, uneasiness, muscle cramping, and insomnia. In some extreme cases Valium can also lead to intense rage, and acts of violence. Valium is known to increase self mutilating impulses and behaviors, and in rare extreme cases can lead to suicidal behavior or impulses. Driving any type of vehicle, especially heavy machinery, should be avoided as Valium can make you impaired, an effect which is worsened when combined with alcohol. If any of these serious side effects are noticed in any patient undergoing Valium treatment, the treatment should ceases immediately.

Valium will increase or alter the effects of alcohol, other hypnotics, narcotics, sedatives or muscle relaxants. Valium may also increase the risk of forming dependencies to other drugs. Consult a physician before mixing Valium with any oral contraceptive, drugs for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease, antipsychotics, ranitidine, MAOI’s, Valerian herbs, or other prescription drugs. Any woman who is currently nursing, pregnant, or trying to become pregnant should not take Valium. Valium should be avoided by any patient suffering from suicidal tendencies or serious depression, shock or a coma, liver disease or deficiencies, glaucoma, hepatitis, sleep apnea, psychosis, hypoventilation, respiratory conditions, or have a history of alcohol or substance abuse. Elderly and young patients using Valium should use caution.
